A quick and basic Australian bread, traditionally baked on damped down campfire embers (hence the name!).

  • Plain flour icon

    Method

  • 1. Pre-heat oven - 190°C
  • 2. Add plain flour, baking powder and salt to a clean large mixing bowl
  • 3. Whisk together until combined
  • 4. Rub in salted butter until coarse crumbs form
  • 5. Add milk
  • 6. Mix until dough forms
  • 7. Shape into a ball
  • 8. Transfer dough to large cast iron skillet
  • 9. Flatten gently
  • 10. Cut a shallow cross into the top
  • 11. Brush with milk
  • 12. Bake until crisp around the edges - 30 min, 190°C
  • 13. Serve
